Surrounded by windows overlooking Jermyn Street and Duke Street on one side and Fortnum's famous Food Hall on the other, The Gallery makes an ideal pit stop and refuelling point between stints of shopping and browsing. The kitchen offers a ‘Taste of the Food Hall’, and the menu casts its net wide: mackerel fillet on a mound of potato and dill salad has gone down well, but you might also find anything from steak tartare or veal and bacon terrine with green peppercorn sauce to line-caught sea bass with braised fennel, tomato and saffron vierge or ox-cheek bourguignon with creamy mash. For afters, perhaps try pineapple carpaccio or flourless Valrhona chocolate pudding with vanilla mascarpone. The food passes muster, although “seriously embarrassing service” ruined the experience for one disgruntled visitor.
