Right on the sands at the corner of Bath Street and Portobello’s Esplanade are premises that have hosted various bars over the years, but now house a family-friendly bar/bistro with a decent menu and sound drinks list. The ‘Espy’ sports basic wooden fittings, some comfy couches and sea views from the window seats. Catch it for weekend breakfast (eggs Benedict, maybe) or order from the main menu at other times. It’s robust grub rather than Roux brothers’ finesse – most people come for a homemade burger and a pint, a big plate of nachos or an ample salad such as rocket and roast beetroot with goats’ cheese. This ain’t Mykonos and beach competition is hardly fierce, but The Esplanade is packed to the gunnels on sunny weekends and bank holidays.
