Snuggled in the hamlet of Stanhoe, this local boozer (formerly the Crown) is now owned by the people who run the well-regarded Wiveton Bell a few miles along the coast. Like its better-known sibling, the cooking here is of a high standard, and the kitchen makes admirable use of Norfolk produce, ranging from Brancaster mussels to Briston pork and Melton Park Estate venison. Otherwise, expect the likes of goats’ cheese and red onion en croûte, Thai green chicken curry or butternut squash risotto. Elgood’s beers are the house ales, and there are some potable wines too. In summer, the big garden (complete with patio heaters) is a popular spot, while in winter there are open fires to huddle round – plus a couple of rooms if you want to stay the night.
