The Crown

SquareMeal Review of The Crown

Just off N1’s main drag lies this cute, friendly corner boozer for locals – which in 21st-century Islington means Guardian journalists, authors, TV comedians and Labour policy wonks. Order modern Brit pub grub, Fuller’s ales and guest beers such as ESB, Red Fox or Gales Seafarers ale. Stare into the embers as you plan your next novel, gag or initiative to wrong-foot Mr Cameron.

Avoid. Head to the regent instead!

I wrote a negative review after witnessing the manager be really rude to a family - laughed when a toddler hurt his head and made a nasty comment. He then stalked my personal pictures and posted it without my consent on Facebook accusing me of not being in the pub when it was literally taken in the pub. Food is ok But I would not return. He's really let the place down. I'm entitled to post a review and I would have expected him to use that as an opportunity to redeem himself instead of reinforcing my opinion.

While visually a charming Victorian pub, with good food, the service leaves a lot to be desired…. I’ve been a regular there for over 10 years and sadly, it’s now pretending to be something it’s not and is at the stage where if something is not right or you need to make a complaint, you are in the wrong. Instead taking feedback from a regular, (formerly) loyal customer, they will try to argue their way out of it. To prove a point. Even over a slice of bread. No apology, no grace, and one regular customer less. This has happened a few times recently. Perhaps Mary Portas will turn to pubs and come sort them out? Instead of sorting the problem and smoothing things over, you will end up leaving with an even worse experience. Ultimately, it is part of a chain and the mentality born of corporate training reigns. “If you don’t like it, don’t come back”. It’s a waste of what used to be a great gastro pub but there a lot of other options nearby so unless you’re the type never to complain, don’t waste your time with The Crown. I won’t. I’m so done, Fullers need a new word for done.
