One of a small group of Norfolk pubs and hotels run by locally renowned Kiwi chef Chris Coubrough, this old coaching inn is situated on Wells’ secluded green (The Buttlands) and does duty as a watering hole and serious restaurant. The global wine list has an excellent New World contingent and plenty by the glass, while beer lovers can drink ales from the well-regarded new microbrewery, Jo C’s Norfolk Ales (Chris’s wife is the brewer): try Old Bustard Bitter or Norfolk Kiwi, made with New Zealand hops. Food-wise, Norfolk produce meets the world larder as the kitchen sends out plates of char-grilled quail with Asian coleslaw, roast hake on pearl barley risotto, New York beef rib with hand-cut chips, and peanut butter parfait with chocolate sauce. Ciabattas are also available at lunchtime, and Tuesday night is seafood night.
