SquareMeal Review of The Company Shed

Bronze Award

The Company Shed is primarily a fishmonger, but this café is a hugely successful side-line for owners Richard and Heather Hayward, who also have an oyster farm. Located among the salt marshes and boatyards of West Mersea, most of the catch is purchased from local fishermen, who dock just 200m along the shore. Customers squeeze around rough-hewn communal tables and are expected to bring their own bread and wine, but no one cares when the prize is the freshest shellfish and crustacea imaginable: try the mighty seafood platter loaded with half a crab, prawns (peeled and shell-on), smoked mackerel, smoked salmon and a giant, juicy crevette. Lobster is often available too, along with other treats that the boats have brought in. No fuss, no frills, no bookings and cash only, but “worth the two-hour drive from London” insists a fan.

About

The Company Shed is a fishmongers and restaurant located off Coast Road, West Mersea.

Originally a stand-alone fishmongers, The Company Shed now has a simple, seasonal menu of locally caught fresh fish platters, oysters and hot seafood. The restaurant itself is rustic and unique, with a focus on fresh quality ingredients.

Perhaps you'll kick things off with the smoked mackerel pate followed by the salmon and prawn platter served with garlic mayo and salad. Alternatively, if you're looking for hot dishes you might enjoy the crispy fried calamari, or the freshly seared scallops served with thyme and bacon butter.

Dishes vary depending on produce and availability, however you will also find a small selection of pre-order dishes available, such as the grilled lobster, tuna burger and fish pie.

There is also a good drinks menu available at The Company Shed, including small batches of good quality local wine from the East Mersea Island Vineyard. You will also find Mersea Island beers made at their own micro brewery, plus prosecco, and soft drinks.

The Company Shed is simply decorated with wooden tables and chairs sitting alongside the fresh fish counter. The interior appears relaxed and sociable.

There is also a substantial and tempting sounding takeaway menu available with vegetarian and vegan options upon request. You will need to pre-order and collect using the online ordering form.

Children are welcome at The Company Shed, there is not a separate children's menu however you will find some smaller dishes.

If you're looking to organise a special event or party, The Company Shed welcomes your booking either at the restaurant, or at your chosen venue. Contact the team if you would like to talk about menus and dishes for your private booking.

It is also worth noting that those visiting from off the island are encouraged to check the tide timetable before crossing.

There is not much one has to say about the company shed, It's delicious freshly prepared fish at its best! I would recommend arriving early if you are a group of more than 4 it does get busy and you will have to wait, but it is worth it. Get yourself on the black board and then go for a walk and enjoy the pebbly beaches, oyster beds and weather beaten fishermen that were probably catching your lunch hours before. When you do sit down I suggest having a platter and a selection of hot dishes, you can't really go wrong. Don't forget to take some bread and wine!

A place to try if you fancy a bit of seafood. We visited on a sunny Thursday lunch-time and got there in less than an hour and a half from London, which is less that what it takes sometimes to cross the city. Remember to take your wine, bread, butter and mayo, there are a couple of supermarkets on the way there and there is a bakery less than a mile away. Glasses are provided and you help yourself to them straight off the shelves. We sat in the sun awaiting for ‘our’ table for about 30 minutes. We had some wine and bread whilst waiting and had a friendly chat with the other customers who all have seemed to have travelled in excess of 50 miles to get to this place. We were sited in a table for 4 and shared with another couple. We went a bit overboard in terms of ordering. Whilst most people seemed happy to share the platter we thought we would made the most of it. From the hot food we ordered scallops, king prawns and razor clams. (scallops and king prawns were amazing). From the cold food we ordered lobster, oysters, langoustines and a whole crab. The oysters were incredibily fresh and the langoustine and the crab delicious. Lobster was nice but I fancy it better grilled with some chips than plainly boiled. I have to say we were pretty full after all that, however completely worth it. The bill? £40 for two! That's what you call value for money. We went for a walk around the beach and had a nice ice-cream at the black pearl coffee bar. We were back in London in no times after an exciting and delicious experience.
