If, for some unfathomable reason, you should find yourself in the hinterlands of Cambridge’s suburb Cherry Hinton looking for refreshment, you would be very wise to drop in on this unassuming little daytime-only coffee shop. The grim concrete exterior belies the hidden charm of a world inside where heavily tattooed (and extraordinarily friendly) waiting staff serve up some of the best coffee, cakes and pastries in Cambridge – to anyone and everyone, from knitting blue-rinse nanas to skint dip-dyed students. Homemade sausage rolls and pastry-wrapped bacon bites are a highlight. Standard sarnies, soups and jacket potatoes are also available, as is a takeaway and delivery service. In its own quiet way, The Coffee House is the stuff of which regeneration hopes and community dreams are made.
