About

Originally a 1913 ‘picture palace’ – ceded to bingo and snooker since the 1950s – The Castle Cinema reverted to its original function in 2016. The venue is now located above an upmarket supermarket and run as a crowd-funded community enterprise, providing a thoughtfully curated programme of first-run films and edgy alt flicks. It’s a fabulously atmospheric space, incorporating many delicious Edwardian features and a roomy lounge bar-café that resembles a glam 1930s Hollywood set, complete with oxblood leather Chesterfield banquette, gilded palm-tree lamps and teal swivel stools at the art deco-style bar. Here you can sip period-piece cocktails, Spritzes or current London box-office draw, Negroni. Alternatively, choose from a range of wines, or local craft brews from the likes of Beavertown and Pressure Drop. Sweet and savoury snacks, popcorn (natch) and posh ice cream sandwiches are on the menu when we call, pending the arrival of a new pop-up caterer partner.
