What was once farm cottages, housing a wheelwright and a village bakery, is now a family run pub, serving high quality food with a modern twist. The Cartwheel Inn, located on the border of Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire, is set just in front of Whitsbury Manor Stables, the former home of Desert Orchid, a Cheltenham Gold Cup and Irish Grand National Winner. The 18th century cottage is full of history and charm, and is the perfect place to stop at the beginning and/or end of a walk to refuel. Expect real ales and warm hospitality at this family and dog friendly spot, as well as a beautiful beer garden to the rear of the building for when the weather permits. With a large green lawn, it provides the perfect space for young children who struggle to sit still.
A popular spot with locals and visitors alike, it provides a relaxing space with its neutral tones and a homely feel, and is great for every season with outdoor space in the summer and a cosy fire in the winter.
The menu contains a wide range of cuisines across each course, such as mushroom & miso scotch egg or baked Camembert to start and breaded Korean chicken burger included in the mains. However, for those looking for something a bit more classically British, there’s options such as steak, mushroom & ale pie and roast rack of lamb with seasonal veg.
To round off the meal, there’s a choice of desserts that change with the seasons, but expect options like Eton Mess pudding, local cheese and biscuits, and sorbets.
The Cartwheel Inn is regularly stocked with local beers, such as New Forest Ale, as well as a variety of wines from around the world, including all of the favourites like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot.
