SquareMeal Review of The Blue Bar at The Berkeley Hotel

Silver Award

A new conservatory has doubled the footprint at the luxuriously inviting Blue Bar, seamlessly marrying Richard Rogers’ glass pavilion (shades of a VIP airport lounge) to the David Collins-designed snug (a flatteringly lit, seductive salon complete with periwinkle-blue panels by Edwin Lutyens). Bar manager Rashid Ghuloom (ex-Berners Tavern) has produced a lavish drinks list that is colour-coded according to style and strength. Light, refreshing and low in alcohol, La Limonata adds sparkling lemongrass mineral water to kaffir lime, limoncello and blue agave nectar, while punchier hits include the deeply rewarding Smoke & Mirrors (a Manhattan involving Michter’s barrel-strength rye whiskey, Bénédictine, toasted cinnamon, rosehip, sherry and Madeira, produced in a puff of smoke from a crystal decanter). With its bold new space, tastefully tweaked design, five-star service, classy snacks, vintage Champagnes and top-notch whiskies, The Blue Bar is back with a bang.

Nice, but oh so expensive
Having enjoyed a fantastic lunch at Koffman’s we decided to finish our afternoon of bunking off work with a trip to the Blue Bar. It’s a lovely room, and certainly attracts a smart and sexy crowd (me excluded). It was a little cold when we went, but did seem to warm up as the evening went on. Funky house music down low in the background and everyone dressed up to enjoy a Friday might out. The service is perfectly fine and our waitress didn’t even bat an eyelid when my slightly drunk companion told her that she was stealing the coasters as they’d look nice in her home, before popping 4 of them into her Chanel handbag. There’s a really good drinks selection, lots of top brands and good cocktails, and you get some really rather lovely complementary nibbles. The real problem though is value for money: admittedly it’s never a good plan to drink champagne in somewhere like this, but a bottle of LPR, plus 5 further glasses of it and 5 Grey Goose with lemonade, plus 12.5% service equals £376 – I felt sick as I paid the bill and that wasn’t just to do with the quantity of drink consumed. Would I go back? Yes, but only if someone else was paying.

fantastic – Quality and elegance. Gorgeous choice of champagne cocktails – grab a seat by the window in the little area to the side for people watching or in the main room for the buzzy and glamorous atmosphere! Great little bar

Slick, seductive and tres chic. The Blue bar at the Berkeley really hits the spot for a trendy yet unpretentious experience. Its charm lies in its simplicity, with an interior that screams library bar with an uplift of feminine elegance and the dark lighting and chocolaty wood furniture finish the room off nicely. Service is professional yet surprisingly friendly and nothing seems to be too much trouble (including an accidentally spilt champagne cocktail, which was swiftly tidied away and replaced with another one without any fuss). Cocktails are the drink of the hour here and there is a vast selection ranging from contemporary exotic to good old classic. Prices are a little on the steep end of the market but the faultless service and rich atmosphere easily make up for it. If anything, you'll be quenching for another drink just to stay a little longer in this little haven away from bustling Knightsbridge. Definitely one to keep in mind for a post shopping spree drink.

The service was friendly and prompt and the cocktails were just what we needed to take the edge off a crazy week, but the atmosphere, sadly, was a bit tired. I can see that in its hey day Madonna might have stopped by, but that ship has long since sailed. Sadly we thought the Blue Bar was past it's prime and to be frank, a little rough around the edges. The decor looks tired and stained, and with gum under my chair it all started to feel a bit dirty. There are nicer hotel bars in the area, so the Blue Bar really needs to take it up a notch if we are to come back.

There's no doubt that The Blue Bar is one of the trendiest hotel bars in London right now although sadly, we didn't spot any celebrities during our visit. Fearing the staff might be a little haughty, we were pleasantly surprised to find them friendly and welcolming and were incredibly impressed by the skills and speed of the two barmen. There's a huge range of drinks on offer and the cocktails are probably some of the most expensive I've ever had. However, they were put together expertly and we couldn't fault anything about them as they looked great and tasted fabulous. A generous tray of Eastern-inspired nibbles served alongside the drink was also incredibly moreish. If you're looking for a laid-back but happening spot, then surely this is it.
