It may be a classic country pub in a ridiculously pretty village, but there isn’t a horse brass or floral carpet in sight; instead, the Black Horse emanates a distinctly Scandinavian vibe, with gingham curtains and striped upholstery on shabby-chic settles. That said, the place still has its roaring fire, as well as a lovely Yorkshire welcome and comforts aplenty on the menu. Twice-baked Fountain’s Gold cheese soufflé might get things started, before ‘signature’ mains of butter-poached halibut with smoked milk, celeriac purée, potato rösti and pickled carrot or a perfect ‘taste of pork’ (sticky cheek, crispy belly, tender fillet and black pudding with vanilla mayonnaise). Take your time, read the papers, order the pudding you weren’t going to have (perhaps warm gingerbread with pear mousse and cinnamon cream), and chuckle at the cute messages embroidered on the cushions.
