Many of Brighton’s best pubs are found outside the city centre and this friendly local on a quiet street in Hove is a case in point. Previously a run-down old man’s boozer, it has been transformed by new landlord Simon Stern into a welcoming pub that successfully keeps both drinkers and foodies happy. Local brews from Dark Star and Bison Beer are served over the retro glazed tile bar, and the menu showcases Sussex ingredients in simple but well-cooked dishes. Scallop and prawn salad with curried aïoli dressing vies with salt and pepper squid among the starters, while spiced lamb cutlets marinated in pomegranate molasses tempts among the mains. Save space for treacle tart with ginger ice cream from local food hero Boho Gelato. The no-TV policy is much appreciated by the cultivated locals, as is a thoughtfully crafted wine list that explores Old and New World vineyards.
