These days it’s perched at the edge of Henley Bridge looking out over the Regatta finishing post, but this tall and skinny 14th-century inn was once literally ‘on’ the bridge – judging by the
original foundations found in its cellar. Don’t expect modish mixology or esoteric local ales here – The Angel’s USP is its treasured riverside location, which is reckoned to be Henley’s finest.
Assorted Brakspear beers are always well kept, the wine list is modest, and shorts are entirely as expected. The food is a shade more adventurous, with dishes such as pork fillet on tomato salad or
duck confit with red cabbage cooked well enough to fill a hole. Reservations for Regatta week are vastly over-subscribed, so get in early – if the prospect of competitive rowing isn’t enough
incentive, an outdoor mojito bar and resident DJs surely will be.
