Taquiza is a Mexican restaurant and taco bar, tucked away inside beloved Peckham nightclub The Carpet Shop, under the railway arches just off Rye Lane. The restaurant is run by chef Sam Tarneberg and his partner - the pair have spent many years working in kitchens in London, and before that they worked in Mexico, working in some of the country's best restaurants and running a street-food stall in Mexico City.
The menu packs in lots of classic Mexican flavours, spread across a variety of tacos as well as sharing plates. Aside from classics like totopos with salsa and refried black beans, Sam cooks up jackfruit tinga tostadas, roasted sweetcorn esquites, drizzled with sauces, and fried chicken wings with pineapple habanero hot sauce.
There are lots of tacos on the menu, so choose from 24 hour beef cheek enchiladas with salsa roja, onion and coriander, pickled chillies and crispy onions, or the green chilli pork belly castacan, the fried coconut enoki mushroom with jalapeno pico and salsa diabla, and crispy salt and pepper squid with red cabbage and house hot sauce. All tacos are served with corn tortillas, and spice levels are 'very authentic' so if you're not big on spice, make sure you let one of the team know before you order.
Taquiza also has a single dessert on the menu for those with a sweet tooth and a bit of extra room - at the time of writing that's a lime zest flan napolitano with roasted pineapple and mezcal.
Best of all, you can head on over to The Carpet Shop for a boogie once you're done!
