Just minutes from Shoreditch High Street is Sushi Revolution - a Japanese restaurant rebelling against tradition with innovative sushi variations. This is the second iteration of subversive sushi restaurants, joining its popular sister site in Brixton. By day it's a bright and buzzy space with floor-to-ceiling windows and classically clean Japanese interior design features. By night, the stained wood furnishings, bar stools and greenery are lit by amber pendant lighting and the space takes on a sleek city feel.
As the name suggests, this isn’t a sushi restaurant constrained by tradition - it's a subversive spot where you can expect the likes of panko popcorn shrimp with chilli mayo, chives and parmesan. You’ll still find the classics: salmon and yellowtail nigiri, sashimi, sushi rolls, and classic otsumami and starters like spicy edamame and Padron peppers. But the Sushi Revolution menu also includes interesting European and global influences as evidenced by a tuna tartar sushi with goat's cheese, avocado and truffle onion soy.
‘The Revolution’ section of the menu, which features signatures like scallop kataifi with black garlic aioli and mustard cress, is especially deserving of attention. And if raw fish isn’t your style, you’ll also find a variety of salad and vegan options like perfectly fried Japanese aubergine dish served with beetroot den miso, crispy onion, sesame, and coriander; veggie gyoza ‘okonomiyaki’ with spicy miso, tonkatsu and vegan aioli; and cucumber tataki with red pepper ponzu and coriander cress. You can also opt for platters to share as well as larger plates of uramaki or kaburimaki.
The drinks selection is similarly rebellious. Alongside internationally recognised beers and sakes, guests can expect Japanese interpretations of classic cocktails. Picture Yuzu Cosmopolitans with yuzu sake and orange bitters, and an A-Kira Royales composed of plum sake, cassis, prosecco and angostura.
