The Cambridge outpost of this London mini-chain is a jaw-dropping ad for Japanese minimalism crossed with Danish design. All traces of the building’s past as a Reading Room have been obliterated to reveal soaring ceilings, and there’s now a cool New York-style eat-at bar in the round. You could certainly impress a date here, but customers are too closely packed to encourage intimacy – and awkwardly shaped tables won’t suit groups either, which is a shame as the menu is a gift for sharing. Although the concept of serving sushi alongside grilled skewers isn’t strictly authentic, and the glossy never-ending menu is rather overwhelming, the beautifully presented platters of sashimi, nigiri and rolls will delight sushi fans, and the yakitori with gloriously sticky sauces will satisfy meat eaters. Save room for a surprisingly flavoursome dessert platter, but when the bill arrives students might need the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’.
