US-style grills have long held Londoners in their thrall, but this small American diner on St Albans Road is intent on wowing Watford. The Smoky Boys use great-quality British meat (all halal) that has been aged for a minimum of 40 days to amplify its flavour and tenderness. Begin with ‘bites’: fully loaded chilli nachos, maybe, or char-grilled shrimps (aka prawns). Then move on to hot dogs, ribs and steaks, or perhaps half a grilled chicken for £6.95. If you’re in the mood for a burger, choose one of the house specials – Moroccan lamb, for instance, with roasted red peppers, tzatziki, grilled halloumi cheese and smoky chilli harissa – or build your own. It’s an inexpensive, easy, fast and fun joint, and the milk shakes and (non-alcoholic) fruit cocktails are moreish and delicious: try a coconut and basil Daiquiri.
