Found in London Bridge, Smashing Plates is the brainchild of Greek restaurateur Neofytos Christodoulou - a lively fast casual restaurant serving up its own individual take on Greek and Cypriot street food classics.
Smashing Plates is a relaxed and intimate space, with room for just under 30 diners. Guests order their food via electronic tablets, before collecting it from the counter and taking it back to their tables. Open all day, Smashing Plates specialises in the classic Greek street food dish of gyros, but there are a handful of plant-based options to choose from too.
Although this is a fun and relaxed concept, Smashing Plates takes its commitment to fastidious sourcing seriously. Meat is sourced responsibly before being butchered in-house, marinated and grilled to order. The signature chicken, pork, and lamb gyros as well as the plant-based alternative are all made to a family recipe - marinated in Greek oregano for 24 hours before being seared to order on a chargrill, where customers can watch their dishes being freshly prepared. Each wrap is then finished with lettuce, tomato, red onion, parsley and a dusting of smoked paprika and accompanied by a selection of sauces including tzatziki, sun blushed chutney, and ‘Smashing Sauce’ (a combination of roasted aubergine and garlic butter).
For those after something a little lighter, there is also a range of salads to try. Options include
a classic Greek salad made fresh daily with tomato, olives, feta and capers, and lentil, feta, sweet pepper, beans, pea and olive. You can pad out your meal with side dishes such as a Spanakopita filo roll (Smashing Plates take on the classic Greek dish stuffed with spinach and feta and sprinkled with sesame seeds), while desserts include a spiced cinnamon pita and handmade baklava.
To wash it all down, sip on fruity canned soft drinks.
