If it’s too cold to head up to boutique hotel The Varsity’s gorgeous rooftop bar, but you still want the rare views over Cambridge’s pretty colleges, take a table at the sixth-floor panoramic brasserie – which pretty much does what it says on the tin. Clean, classic decor with wooden floors, leather banquettes, and a typical long cocktail bar let the picture windows do the talking. The menu covers the usual hotel fare (the likes of steaks with béarnaise sauce, roasted chicken, and garlic mushrooms), but dishes sometimes come with a twist: slow-roasted shoulder of lamb, for instance, which is served with rocket, chilli and hummus. If you have room (and you’ll need it), sample the sundaes: a gooey, diet-busting slice of heaven. Six might not be ground-breaking in terms of cuisine or looks, but it’s a solidly reliable option – and don’t forget those views.
