A bustling little spot, this deservedly popular daytime café is more than just a deli – although its counters of cheeses, meats, breads and homemade delicacies are worth a visit in themselves. Wealthy suburban Cambridge locals regularly make a beeline here, but so do others from farther afield. Most of the menu is on display at the counter and if the interesting array of seasonal salads, such as carrot with pearl barley, don’t get your mouth watering, then the pastry chef’s sweet treats (the likes of apple flapjacks or raspberry and polenta cake) surely will. For drinks, try the Monmouth Coffee, or teas from Sri Lanka via East Anglia. Tables are tightly packed-in and lunchtimes can be a squeeze, so be prepared to make friends with the crowd of regulars – who are fortunately as obliging as the staff.
