The burgers served at this US-based Goliath might appear tame compared to the rock ‘n’ roll efforts produced by our own home-grown Davids, but there are plenty of reasons why Shake Shack has outlets worldwide. First, it’s conscientious about sourcing: its UK burgers use Aberdeen Angus beef and its hot dogs are made with free-range pork from an East Anglian farmer, while further Anglophile flourishes include ale-marinated shallots and sundaes topped with Michelin-starred St John’s cult brown-sugar biscuits. This fast-food joint also serves beers and exclusively bottled wines too, but don’t forget its final USP – a constantly changing sweet-toothed parade of frozen custards with flavours ranging from toffee apple to chocolate-covered marshmallow, served as ‘concrete’ ice creams or thick shakes. Allcomers are welcome to join the queue, and no one is denied the Shake Shack experience – they even do doggy treats.
