More seaside chic than Bohemian chic, this thirties-style clapboard lodging in fashionable Burton Bradstock on the Jurassic Coast exudes savoir-faire and warmth thanks to a terrific renovation by an MD hailing from London’s Groucho Club. But despite all this internal love and affection, it is the clifftop location and uninterrupted views across the shingle beach and ever-changing seascape of Lyme Bay that is the hotel’s main selling-point. Locals, however, swear by the class of the restaurant, and for good reason. It shines brightly for many a mile in these parts.
Accomplished modern British food delivers on all fronts, be it a starter of Jerusalem artichokes with soft boiled egg & black truffle or a simple but very tasty smoked haddock and celeriac chowder. Fresh fish is always a fail-safe, as in John Dory with gremolata, or there might be confit of duck’s leg with grilled fig, lentils and black cabbage. Round it all off with panna cotta with tea-soaked prunes or chocolate truffle cake with poached pear and praline ice cream. And drink decent cocktails and wines from an approachable list. Staff are relaxed but efficient in keeping with the hotel's overall vibe.
