The Hilton Bournemouth’s casual Brit restaurant Schpoons and Forx takes inspiration from an eclectic supporting cast of international ingredients, as well as the tools of the trade: the dining room is decorated with utensils, which means spoons, spatulas and forks hanging from the ceiling.
Questionable adornments aside, the rest of the dining room is a rather stylish affair, featuring a blue tiled bar, mosaic flooring and brass accents. The restaurant is also filled with sunlight thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, while the space has an appealing buzz thanks to an open kitchen.
In possession of a tandoor oven, the kitchen turns out the likes of whole, tandoor-roasted mackerel, or perhaps cuttlefish with clams and sherry vinegar. There’s a Middle Eastern accent too; the menu is peppered with charred flatbreads and helpings of Moroccan-spiced feta. Our sizeable portion of marinated Salt Marsh lamb rump was presented meze-style, with pomegranate seeds, pickled chillies, mint and yogurt combining for lip-smacking, tangy flavours.
A variety of steaks also feature, which are well-supported by a manageable wine list filled with useful notes. Food prices are predictably high for a hotel so close to the beach, but weekend menus offer a more affordable way in. Visit on a Saturday to indulge with weekend brunch, which can be made bottomless (60 minutes on free-flowing Prosecco). Expect classic brunch fare such as American-style pancakes topped with crispy bacon and lashings of maple syrup, or smashed avocado and poached eggs on sourdough toast.
Schpoons & Forx is a viable spot for dinner with the littles ones too, as it features a children’s menu. While the grown-ups check out that aforementioned wine menu, kids can tuck into the likes of baked meatballs in tomato sauce or tacos filled with crispy chicken and smashed avocado. Plus, there’s ice cream to finish (available for both actual children and big kids).
