Roots is the brain child and vision of its chef and owner, Mayur Nagarale, and a space that represents traditional and modern Indian food. Here, you can taste the deliciousness of Indian food as a whole, with dishes represented from most of India's regions, and a range of specialities. Because of India's dramatic landscape, hot weather and geography, it is a country that has a bounty of incredible ingredients. So, Roots tap into what is available, and use traditional Indian techniques to showcase all that the South Asian country has to offer, along with a range of daily specials. The restaurant can be found in the leafy and pretty area of Teddington town in London, bringing a true taste of India to West London each day of the week, except for Mondays.
To kick off your experience, try ordering a selection of starters or street food dishes. These include the dahi puri chat, made with potatoes, yoghurt, chickpeas, sev and fresh pomegranate seeds, along with the Roots bhajiyas made of seasonal greens, onions, ajwain, potato and green chutney. Also on the menu are frog’s legs in Chennai style, crispy chicken fritters sauteed in curry leaves, and Punjabi samosas.
Then, move onto curry dishes. The old Delhi butter chicken is a traditional buttery dish from the streets of Old Delhi, and is a perfect combination of tandoori chicken with creamy tomato and spices, along with the chef's speciality of seabass and prawn moilee, a delicate combination with curry leaves, coconut and mustard seeds.
There are also biryani dishes like the Hyderabad goat, and sides of beetroot and cucumber raita, along with lasooni kumbh palak and bhindi achari.
