Rockfish’s modern take on the British chippie sits on the quayside overlooking the Dart Estuary – a colourful, welcoming, family-friendly venue that comes with solid foodie credentials (it’s related to The Seahorse restaurant a couple of doors away). The interior is all pastel seashore tones and warm pale woods, while the open kitchen works with the freshest fish: the majority is landed at Brixham harbour, although haddock and cod are sourced from sustainable Norwegian stocks. The wide-ranging, no-nonsense menu is a crowd pleaser, so have your chosen species battered (maybe red gurnard), breadcrumbed (perhaps monkfish) or simply grilled (sea bass). Chips are de rigueur and everything is served in takeout-style boxes with all the traditional accessories (mushy peas, tartare sauce, ketchup), while desserts stay in the bread-and-butter pudding comfort zone. With a takeaway round the corner, all is as it should be.
