Boasting a plum Kensington location, directly opposite Hyde Park, Publiq bills itself as a traditional British public house, but we reckon it’s actually rather contemporary. For example, you won’t find any pork pies here and can instead expect to dine on a menu of sharing plates while sipping on seasonal cocktails, natural wines and beers sourced from local breweries.
Publiq is a relaxed and inviting space, with the interiors combining old and new styles - think ratan furnishings, warm oak wood wall panelling, concrete asymmetry and a marble topped bar. Floor to ceiling windows on the ground floor flood the space with natural light, while a mirror panelled ceiling further helps bounce light around the space. Those looking for actually sunshine meanwhile, can decamp to the snug outdoor terrace, which is covered and heated to protect against the famously unpredictable British weather.
The food menu has been designed by head chef Emilian Craciun (previously of George Mayfair and Ham Yard Hotel), who is committed to working with independent, quality-led producers who champion regenerative farming, as well as organic and seasonal ingredients. The offering consists of a range of sharing plates, which change with the seasons. On your visit, you might come across the likes of beef brisket croquettes made from ex dairy cows or wild sauteed mushrooms which are locally foraged and served with croutons and Pecorino Romano. Those looking for something more substantial can opt for the ‘big piece’ - a rotating option which includes one cut of meat and a sustainably caught fish, both of which can be cooked on Publiq’s Japanese inspired Hibachi grill.
As for cocktails, expect a nine-strong seasonally driven list which forgoes gimmicks in favour of sustainability. Sips you might find include a Beetroot and Rosehip Highball with vodka, beetroot, sweet vermouth and Yonder rosehip saison.
