Ping Pong Bow Bells House

SquareMeal Review of Ping Pong Bow Bells House

With branches peppered across London, this mini-chain touts affordable dim sum and drinks all day. The pan-Asian menu covers your traditional offerings of har gau and bao buns, with the addition of regularly changing specials such as succulent black prawn dumplings and crisp truffle-laced spring rolls. For the uninitiated, helpful staff run through the menu and are happy to make suggestions, then diners mark their order on the paper ‘pick and tick’ menus and each plate arrives at the table as soon as they are ready. Dishes are designed to share, however great value set menus (from £9.95 a head) can be ordered per person and cater to veggies, vegans and those after a healthier option. Soft drinks are no afterthought here, with a comprehensive selection of custom teas, infusions, juices and non-alcoholic cocktails running alongside a mix of wines, beers and cocktails. Fun and informal, Ping Pong ticks the boxes for anything from a quick bite to a lively special occasion.

Lovely place, lovely staff

Andrea at Bow Bell House provided an amazing service. It was my friend's Birthday and she was so nice at suggesting things from the menu and providing further background on ingredients.

On top she surprised with a nice desert for my friend. Not only the food is amazing but this is world class serice!

Great place for a quick lunch
I've been to Ping Pong many times and absolutely love it. They offer set menu's which are great value for money. They give you a menu and you tick off the items that you want. The food comes out as soon as it is ready (very quick) and you can continue to order as you go. I love the atmosphere here, it feels very sociable and the staff are always very laid back and friendly. Great cocktail list too.

A Long Time Favourite
I've been going to Ping Pong regularly for about 6 years. My order is always the same, with a couple of different additions each time. In fact, I go so much that my friends just tell me to order whatever is good... I see it as a positive that they trust me, however secretly I think it's probably because they think I go too much! Beer and wine is good, Tsingtao is always a winner - I love dim sum, although when I first started eating it, we had it for breakfast rather than lunch or supper so beer wasn't really present! My favourites are the char sui buns, the roast pork puffs, the prawn toast, the crispy prawn balls, all of the steamed dumplings are delish. I don't think there is anything on the menu that I wouldn't try. My only criticism is that the food comes when it comes, even if you ordered half the menu it can all arrive at once. I have once had my whole meal delivered before our drinks turned up... Not ideal. I would recommend that as you're placing you're order, talk to your server and discuss that you might not want everything to arrive at once and maybe they could put half of it through first and come back and do the second half slightly later. Then you don't run the risk of cold rubbery dim sum when you're finishing you meal! The staff are always eager to help and nothing is too much trouble. Sometimes getting their attention can be difficult, but adopting the air traffic controller pose often helps! Overall, it's definitely worth a visit (or 1000 visits if you're me).

Ping Pong lunch
Enjoyed a good lunch at Ping Pong. Food was delicious and fresh. Service was fine, although we did wait for around 5 minutes before we could attract someone's attention to get the bill. Would go again and recommend to others.

Great place for casual diner
We went there for a family evening (6 of us), and as always the food and atmosphere is impeccable. It was a Saturday evening, and they could have benefited from 1 more member of staff, as occasionally the wait was longer than you would expect, whether to get another round of drinks...or the bill. But again, great place for an unassuming friendly diner. Very good value too, even if you let yourself carried away with the so many choices!, and end up with a few too many dim sums... ;-)

Business lunch
The food at this restaurant is excellent and always very hot which is remarkable considering the amount the diners in the restaurant that need to be served. Would definitely recommend this place for a quick business lunch or even longer.

Ping Pong is not my first port of call for authentic dim-sum, but there is no denying that it does the job almost as well. A more than generous selection of steamed, fried and signature dim-sums, some of which are definitely better than others. The star of the show for me has to be the roast pork puffs, with juicy sweet pork filling enveloped in flaky puff pastry, sprinkled with sesame seeds. Duck spring rolls with hoisin sauce, steamed seafood dumplings and the pork fillet are all great choices. They have a great choice of drinks and cocktails too, which is nice… Desserts are a very different affair as they are mediocre. Very kindly, our waitress warned me that the coconut cakes are not really cakes (per se) and aren't that tasty… If anything, honesty like this is refreshing and should be rewarded! I had the banana and chocolate spring rolls, which could do with less pastry and more chocolate and my friend chose the chilli and chocolate mousse, which she said was actually quite spicy, but definitely in line with the whole Oriental theme I guess. The best value at Ping Pong comes on Sundays (not at this particular branch as its closed) when for about £16 you can eat UNLIMITED dim-sum and that is pretty great! Go on an empty stomach to get the most value!

“Little steamed parcels of deliciousness” is how Ping Pong entice you inside so after an afternoon rambling around the city I decided to pop into the Bread Street branch. It was the first time I've visited Ping Pong – I'm lucky enough to have one near the office but unfortunately for Ping Pong, Yauatcha is closer to me and provides hard competition to beat. The restaurant seemed like very similar in decor to Hakkasan and it's various clones but instantly gave of a more relaxed feel to it. Tables are well spaced and comfortable enough for what you need as lets face it you won't be there much longer than an hour. The food certainly lived up to the deliciousness promised – Pork Puffs, Har Gau, Spicy Chicken Dumplings and Salmon with Ramen noodles being some of the more memorable dishes. Service was polite, swift and very efficient and the overall experience left me impressed. Prices are excellent and all the dishes excellent value for money – the set menus especially look fantastic value for those unable or too lazy to decide from the main menu. Very pleasant overall and a nice and slightly cheaper alternative to Yauatcha.
