Owned and run by the Port Gaverne hotel and restaurant, Pilchards is the quintessential Cornish beach café situated just moments away from the sea. Serving up a daily changing menu of both small and large plates, the café has a laidback atmosphere making it a great spot to kick back and relax while enjoying some high-quality cookery. Its convenient location at the top of the beach also means you can head here when you're looking for shelter from the sun (or rain)! Welcoming customers of all ages, Pilchards Café also caters for children, if you're on the hunt for somewhere family-friendly.
Built entirely from wood, Pilchards Café almost has the appearance of large shack from the outside but the inside has been done up stylishly to look like a smart restaurant; tables are spread out and an open kitchen allows you to see the chefs at work. The large, decked terrace area at Pilchards Café provides further space for customers and allows them to dine outside with views of the sea when the weather allows.
The menu at Pilchards consists of a mixture of small and large plates, which can either be shared among the whole table or ordered individually. Begin your meal with Porthilly oysters topped with shallot mignonette, or manzanilla olives while you peruse the menu. Small plates on offer range from burrata with courgette, olive caramel and basil to grilled octopus with deep-flavoured carrot maafe sauce and peanut dukkah, while large plates might include a whole Cornish dover sole with samphire butter to grilled lamb chops with smoked anchovy and paprika. Finish proceedings with tempting desserts such as dark chocolate mousse with honeycomb and burnt Basque cheesecake.
You can choose to accompany your food with one of the various cocktails available at Pilchards, or opt for a glass of wine, local beer or soft drink.
