Piece of Jerk is an independent local eatery in South London, with a small, contemporary space on Balham High Road. The restaurant's concept revolves around bringing American and Jamaican cuisines together, serving up a menu of jerk chicken, burgers and some seafood-based dishes, too. Piece of Jerk has been known to pop up at food markets and festivals all over London, but here at its flagship you can enjoy the full menu all week.
In terms of the menu, the largest section is the burgers with each one named after a different street or area in Spanish Town, Jamaica, where the founder spent much of their childhood. The Pain Town, for example, mixes chipotle sauce with pickles, sliced gouda and a whole chicken breast, on a brioche bun. While Walk's Road includes bacon, lettuce, tomato, chicken, cheddar and mayonnaise, with plenty more options besides.
Onto the jerk chicken section and you can order succulent, twice-fried jerk whole chicken pieces that are available in plain (mild), jerk (spicy) or honey barbecue flavour (sweet), for whatever is your preference. We particularly like the sound of the crispy skin jerk infused whole chicken pieces which can be served with yellow rice, mac and cheese, or fries.
You might be thinking that if you're vegan, this totally isn't the place for you but actually, you might be surprised. The menu does offer some vegan options, spanning chicken and burgers, but you'd be best asking the team to ensure that it's 100% plant-based.
As well as serving up loads of delicious mains, Piece of Jerk also specialises in desserts. Think indulgent, fun, over-the-top sweet treats like red velvet waffles with Oreo pieces cooked into every slice, alongside a cake batter waffle finished with sauce, cream and berries. Seeing as the restaurant also offers private dining options, this could be the place to throw a party.
