SquareMeal Review of Pho & Bun

Bronze Award

Part of the same family as Holborn’s Viet Eat, this casual Vietnamese restaurant is a welcome addition to Shaftesbury Avenue. The split-level dining room is cramped and noisy, best suited to a cheap meal with friends. Perhaps start with spring rolls or fiery crisp fried squid, before a bowl of pho, rice and noodle dishes, or the speciality steamed bun burgers. With Bao doing a roaring trade nearby, a burger patty sandwiched between two steamed buns might seem a logical progression. Sliced mango replaces the traditional cheese, but sadly the result isn’t as tasty as a good burger or bao – and the fillings easily slip out. Our advice? Stick to summer rolls, fat with juicy tiger prawns, and the superb-value pho almost overflowing with tofu, chicken, steak or BBQ pork. Desserts include a perfectly light, wobbly pandan and coconut pannacotta. Low prices and happy staff tie up a pleasing package.

Delicious little buns of happiness!
I have been to this restaurant many times and still always enjoy the simplicity of juicy meant served in a fluffy bun. They do offer other options like Ramen and noodles, but the fluffy buns are the best!

Great experience!!
Really enjoyed our dining trip to Pho & Bun food was very scrumptious we had the steamed burgers which were really good!, and service was great, nice quirky venue, slightly overpriced for what it was as portions are very small but it was fun so would recommend :-)

Don't miss out
I have been a loyal customer to their sister restaurant Viet Eat in Holborn since it opened and thier new opening ticks every box! We were looked after extremely well and attentively, made to feel at home even though the restaurant was busy and packed. The menu is second to none and well priced and has an excellent variety of traditional and modern Vietnamese food. We will certainly be coming again soon and I highly recommend to anyone who happens to be in the area.

Avoid - unless you want to be shouted at
Went with some work colleagues on 04.11.15, as one had read that we should check it out. We arrived at 12.15, the restaurant is quite compact however the decoration and layout is done quite well for the space allowed. The restaurant had 4 other patrons there as we arrived, one couple and two single diners. We were pointed to a table and handed some menus with no greeting. Over the next ten to fifteen minutes the restaurant filled with more patrons filling the restaurant, during this time we had tried to get the attention of the two members of staff so that we could place our order. However they just stated to us several times "one second" before going to serve and greet customers that had come after we had arrived. They took orders from three different groups who arrived after us, whilst we were trying to get their attention, finally they went to a fourth customer who also arrived after our group. At this point I said, "Excuse me, excuse me (still being ignored), Hello?", the server then turned around and shouted "There is no need to shout across the whole restaurant, my name is not HELLO! If you don't like it you may leave!" This resulted in the whole restaurant going quiet and odd looks being passed around, bear in mind this is a small restaurant so the whole atmosphere changed. Needless to say my group left before having a chance to order, the server turned out to be the restaurant manager Dimitri, who should know better to deal with customer service especially with a small establishment treat customers fairly and serve them in order of their arrival (obviously if they are ready to order). I cannot comment on the food, the menu did look nice but the service absolutely let this place down.
