Occupying a wing of the art-deco Pelican Lodge, this café/bar appears to have been designed on a shoestring budget. The boxy concrete space has been jollied up with witty squat-party decor and
homespun art (a surrealist spinning wheel after Marcel Duchamp, for example), while sweet staff punt £6 cocktails such as white Russian and Aperol spritzer (sic). Otherwise, reasonably priced beers
(Quilmes, Red Stripe, Meantime) and half a dozen affordable wines go with design-your-own thin-crust tomato-slathered pizzas cooked with not-quite-there competence. Daytime salads, coffee, tea and
cake give way to evening party bashes that often spill out onto the broad pavement. In all, this is a cute and curious bird – more Camberwell College of Arts than the Peckham ragga tendency.
