With a menu striding across the Pacific – and almost oceanic in size – this new restaurant and lounge bar looks set to get Colchester chatting. Pavilion is no shrinking violet, proudly displaying its £5m decor: stone walls and a bar-front flown in from Asia; reclaimed wood panelling sourced from a sunken ship; a heated terrace and indoor foliage aplenty. The dining day starts with a plethora of breakfast dishes from the open kitchen, veering from porridge to a chorizo, sweet potato and tomato frittata. For lunch, the Asian influence comes to the fore with a selection of sushi and salads, the likes of Penang fish curry, and various grills and skewers from the robata. Dinner expands the choice still further including Wagyu beef sliders among the small plates, and larger dishes such as succulent miso-glazed black cod. Confused? A six-course tasting menu offers a blessedly simple chance to negotiate the carte, while cocktails – perhaps Asian Ginger (saké, vodka, root ginger) – further pep-up proceedings.
