SquareMeal Review of Patisserie Valerie Kensington Church Street

From bohemian beginnings in 1920s Soho, Patisserie Valerie’s unstoppable rise has seen the group grow to some 49 outlets & counting. The original Madame Valerie would doubtless be glad to see how far word has spread of her famous pastrywork (there are now branches in Cambridge, Leeds, Wolverhampton & beyond), though one suspects she might detect a dip in quality. Patisserie Valerie is good at recreating that all-important continental atmosphere (even in new builds), which makes it a pleasingly buzzy place for a croissant or brioche with morning coffee. Pastries & bigger breakfasts (eggs Benedict, full English et al) give way to casual lunches such as Greek salad, fishcakes or a tuna club melt, while the afternoon is best devoted to cream-filled gâteaux, sugary doughnuts & French tarts.

This review relates to Patisserie Valerie Holland Park Avenue Kensington not listed as a branch on SM but a short walk away. I requested Take Away cakes. Surly unsmiling service by a sole foreign female member of staff made me suspicious as the charge £6.00p (I had just checked the cake prices in the window.) I had to request a receipt. On examining it my suspicions were confirmed. I had been charged twice for one single muffin. The muffin was voluminously wrapped in a crunched up big paper bag with the other item so if I hadnt checked could have gone all the way home with it. The resulting apology had the air of a well rehearsed cop out though I let it pass as I was handed a refund. Quite a nasty little incident on a lack lustre afternoon that made one think.

I like Patisserie Valerie for take-away pastries on the weekends. It is ideally located for post-church treats and nicely situated away from the bustle of High Street Kensington. I've also ordered a cake from them- Galette des Rois- which was lovely. I've been many times to the cafe for tea around 16h, but the atmosphere seems to have degraded & I can think of other places I would rather be than that particular room. So I wouldn't sit there for tea with friends, rather take something away. Great choice of pastries, well presented & friendly staff, just not the prettiest atmosphere. Maybe ok for taking a shopping break, but even then, I'd probably go to Whole Foods.
