Following the success of its first venture in Shoreditch, the charitable Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT) has launched a second café-cum-bookshop in the brand-new St Pauls’ Way Centre. The project
aims to help people who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction – hence Paper & Cup’s motto, ‘coffee with a mission’. Much of the furniture has been made by SCT trainees, while the
interior is filled with books, local artwork and bespoke branded goods. Apprentice baristas look after the coffee and other drinks (including free babycinos), while their gastro-minded buddies
takes care of the food – a commendable mix of salads, cakes and sandwiches (beetroot hoummos with cucumber and baby spinach, say). The new venue has a bigger kitchen than the original, so soups and
hot dishes such as lemon chicken with roasted vegetables and harissa also feature on the menu.
