SquareMeal Review of Omeara

Bronze Award

Set in conjoined railway arches at Southwark street-food yard, Flat Iron Square, Omeara is the brainchild of Mumford & Sons keyboardist Ben Lovett. His romantic vision – a convincing pastiche of a peeling 1920s music hall in dusty small-town Mexico – hosts intimate live gigs and DJ shakedowns until dawn, thanks to a 23-hour entertainment licence. Get in the spirit at Lovett’s cute bar next door. Sporting the same retro-bodega decor, it’s open from 5pm for drinks (and food bought from Flat Iron’s stalls if you wish). Beers – Neck Oil, Brooklyn and Moretti on tap – and wine (Chilean Merlot aside) may lack Latin flavour, but Tequila and mezcal fans are in luck: both the ground-floor’s booths and a mezzanine bar’s chesterfields are where to sip superior agave spirits. Cocktails such as New Cuban (a Mojito-Daiquiri hybrid) and Pajero (a mezcal and Cynar agave-foamed Collins) are further reasons to frequent this quirky cabana.
