Located below Leadenhall Market’s thronged Lamb Tavern, this lively dive bar is high on charm, thanks to original Edwardian features and a sympathetic ‘below stairs at Downton Abbey’ revamp. Draught London ales are supplied by Sambrook’s, Redemption and Meantime, with back up from Czech Kozel, Grolsch Blond and some affordable wines (mostly from the New World). Cheese and meat are the things to eat, whether in individual portions (all £5.50) or on boards at £14.95 for three items. Try wild boar and venison salame, Gressingham smoked duck, garlicky rosemary-roasted West Country beef sirloin, Colston Basset Shropshire blue or smoked Lyburn cheeses from Wiltshire. Old Tom, it transpires, was a goose: granted the freedom of Leadenhall Market during Georgian times, it waddled around unmolested before croaking, aged 37.
