Quite possibly inspired by the likes of Purl, the people at Young’s Brewery have created a ‘speakeasy' in the basement of this handsome Bayswater pub. Speaking is indeed easy (given the paucity of punters when we called), but with its ghostly back story involving the unfortunate ‘bloody Mary’ and an upstairs-downstairs Jacobean tryst, this atmospheric flagstone-floored cellar feels more Charles I than Chicago 1929. Cocktails include mai tai, espresso martini and Aperol spritz, and food follows a current trend with ‘franks’ and ‘dogs’ such as chilli and cheese or pastrami, all backed by a selection of accessible wines, bottled craft beers and ales by Meantime and Camden. Whilst it makes for pleasant hole-up, Old Mary’s is ultimately as close to being an echt speakeasy as a Ford Fiesta is to a Ferrari.
