Norman's Cafe began as a takeaway during the COVID-19 pandemic, before opening its doors to the public in 2021. The cafe has had somewhat of a social media buzz in the years since it opened, with queues often stretching down the road. There aren't many tables inside, all surrounded by gingham curtains and a chalkboard menu. An idea that may sound old school, Norman’s Cafe serves retro meals in style, and rather than focusing on fussy food, they do simplicity well.
Breakfast kicks off with beans on toast served with Red Leicester, along with hearty bacon sandwiches. You can also choose from a set, each served with a builder's tea or filter coffee. There's the bubble and squeak with grilled tomato, egg, beans, hash brown and toast, along with the small version of a full English breakfast. Lunch is basic and beautiful, with Guinness bread and butter along with heritage English tomatoes served with olive oil. Main meals include the chicken escalope sandwich with spicy mayo and Red Leicester, along with a cheeseburger, and ham, egg and chips. Dessert is old school, and only comes in one form – rice pudding.
If you just can't get enough, you can even buy Norman's Cafe merch, from tote bags to prints of Norman's breakfast. And, you can recreate the sounds of Norman's Cafe at home, with the playlist available on Spotify. You'll find tunes from A Tribe Called Quest and Diana Ross playing here.
