The brand new Nine Elms Tavern is set to become the local pub for the wealthy inhabitants of the area’s recently built skyscrapers. Its environs are a mixed blessing – a grim urban motorway out front balanced by a sprawling outdoor terrace directly overlooking the Thames. Here, lurid lime-green sofas and gaily painted tin-tub chairs will be in demand whenever the mercury soars. Sip chilled Picpoul de Pinet (£22.40 on a modest wine list), various spritzes or a pint of owners Young’s best brews. Indoors, the bar and dining room’s design-by-committee interior is ‘modern and exciting’ in the same way that the clone developments it serves are ‘characterful and inspiring’. Order small plates (mac & cheese, stout rarebit, buttermilk chicken bites with chilli jam), stone-baked sourdough pizzas (from £9), or pub grub such as shepherd’s pie and greens; burgers; bangers; and ale-battered cod with all the trimmings (£13.50).
