The latest Worlds’ 50 Best Restaurants list has been announced at a glittering ceremony in Singapore, with two Shoreditch restaurants making the cut.
Both The Clove Club (featured image) and Lyle’s made the coveted top 50 list, with the former coming in at number 27, and the latter at number 33.
Shoreditch was the only area in the entirety of the UK to make the list, with previous West London mainstays such as The Ledbury and Dinner by Heston being overlooked.

Three Michelin-starred French restaurant Mirazur took the crown this year and is the first winner from France since the list’s inception. Mirazur, which moved up two places in the list from position number three, is housed on Mauro Colagreco in Menton on the French Riviera, and took the top spot from Italy’s Osteria Francescana, which was no longer eligible following the introduction of a new rule which bars previous winners from the list.
Interestingly, four-time winner Noma in Copenhagen was allowed to place second in the list, despite the introduction of the above rule. This is because the restaurant temporarily closed in 2017 and has now reopened in a new building and with a new concept, although the kitchen is still led by chef René Redzepi. Nonetheless, World’s 50 Best deemed the changes as making the famous restaurant ‘new’ enough to still be considered for this year’s list.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurant list has faced criticism in the past, having being accused of being Eurocentric and favouring male chefs. Last year, the awards attracted controversy when Clare Smyth was given the title of World’s Best Female Chef, even though no equivalent award exists for men. This year, the list includes just five restaurants run by female chefs.
