Small but succesful, Meze is a family-run, independent restaurant in Ellesmere, Shropshire serving up traditional and authentic Greek and Cypriot food. The founder, Debbie, spent 30 years in Cyprus, raising a family, running her own business and learning everything about the culture of Cyprus. Inspired by generations of home-cooked comfort food, the team have brought their passion to Shropshire to introduce diners to the cuisines of Greece and Cyprus.
The award-winning restaurant replicates authentic flavours while prioritising local ingredients and supporting local suppliers. The whole concept of the restaurant is to make the experience as Greek as possible - without breaking any plates, of course.
Traditionally, the menu starts off with fluffy pitta bread and a selection of dips for you to choose from. Familiar hummus and tzatziki join the likes of tirokafteri; a spicy, jalapeno-fuelled dip of feta cheese and greek yoghurt.
From the starters, you can opt for meat or vegetarian mezze plates. A traditional greek sausage is flavoured with pork and leek and would be perfectly accompanied by a bowl of olives or Greek salad. A tzatziki dip joins crispy courgette and feta croquettes while everyone's favourite Cypriot cheese, halloumi, is traditionally grilled to perfection.
Heading into the mains, the menu is split into meat and vegetarian dishes again, with the added section of chargrilled kebabs. Diners can try out Meze's take on a creamy, tomato mousaka; or opt for a boozy chicken metaxa featuring peppers and carrots and served with rice or chips.
If you can't decide between all of the authentic plates, let the team point you in the right direction with the Meze set menu. You'll receive nine of the chef's favourite dishes to be shared amongst the table; plus you'll also receive dips, starters, Greek salad, chips and pitta bread - the whole Greek works. Opa!
