The Sandwich King of London, Max Halley’s, second location is situated inside the iconic Hippodrome Casino, in the heart of lively Leicester Square. With a short yet sensational menu featuring classic casino food reinvigorated, Max Halley pays homage to the legend of the birth of the sandwich.
According to the historic story, the 4th Earl of Sandwich is credited with the eponymous dish because he was so invested in card-playing that he requested slices of bread with his roast beef, in order to eat with his hands and carry on playing. This restaurant celebrates and elevates such a humble backstory, playing with unique flavour combinations and infusing an eccentric atmosphere to expand the simple sandwich to indulgent levels.
Following on from the original Max’s North London Sandwich Shop, this menu offers even more dramatic options. Six towering selections can be found, such as the Meatball Bonanza, the Prawn Cocktail Please, which includes prawns, avocado, and crushed prawn cocktail crisps, and a fried coronation chicken sandwich with lime pickled onions and nigella seeds. More retro sandwiches are up for graps, with two straight up deli classics, one veggie and one meaty, and a bacon chop BLT. A number of drinks, alcoholic and otherwise, are also on offer.
Matching the vibrant vibe of the food is the location itself. The Hippodrome, the UK’s biggest and busiest casino and entertainment business, is a distinctive space buzzing with energy, and provides an exciting backdrop for this outrageous eatery. There are four themed casino floors, along with a handful of bars, and multiple terraces for a breath of fresh air. As the largest licensed premise of the West End, the atmosphere is dynamic, in line with Max’s creations, which are served throughout the building.
