If you're looking for the ultimate Lake District experience, let us introduce The Haweswater Hotel, and in particular, Mark Greenaway's self-titled in-house restaurant. The hotel resides in a stunning, grey-stone Art Deco building which was built in 1937 and has been lovingly restored by the current owners.
Inside, you'll find that the place is brimming with gorgeous, period features, combined with contemporary decor for a stylish, atmpospheric feel. In the hotel's signature restaurant, dark walls and a mix of natural materials are instantly welcoming, creating a perfect place to enjoy lunch, the a la carte menu or the nine courses across the tasting menu.
Here, Mark Greenaway looks to the surrounding areas and their outstanding natural beauty to inspire a menu rooted in local, seasonal produce. For an example of the types of dishes you might expect to enjoy, the tasting menu starts with hand dived Hebridean scallops served with dashi, pork crackling and sea vegetables, followed by Roscoff onion with lamb haggis, turnip tuille and potato mousse.
Other central dishes include cod fillet with batter scraps, peas and crisp potato, alongside beef fillet, salsify, potato terrine and braised short rib. For afters, desserts such as bramble ‘crumble’ with lemon verbena and aeriated custard are bound to wow, as is the chocolate box with smoked yogurt ice cream and frozen shortbread.
If a full tasting menu isn't your thing, don't worry, there are several variations and options to try. As well as the a la carte menu, which allows you to choose your own flavour of the chef's favourite dishes. When it comes to drinks, the team offer a curated cocktail menu of the classics such as an Espresso Martini, Cosmopolitan and Whisky Sour. There's also a selection of champagnes, ports and sherrys, perfect for enjoying after dinner.
