Nestled away in the back streets of Whitby, Mademoiselle's is a French-inspired café and bistro which serves a traditional menu of Gallic classics in a cosy, relaxed setting. The family-run restaurant offers an alternative to Whitby's many famous fish and chips restaurants and is particularly well suited to romantic dinners and special occasions. Mademoiselle's welcoming atmosphere is complemented by friendly service, while the regularly changing food menu, which includes a daily specials board, has something for all tastes. The restaurant's unassuming facade is easily missed but on the inside it's a completely different story; the busy dining room is packed full of furniture and ornaments, creating a grand yet homely feel to the place. A number of different mirrors and clocks hang from the walls, while various mismatching chandeliers ensure that the room never gets too dark and gloomy. With so much going on visually, you might not notice the small bar in the corner and the menu drawn up on the wall. There is also a small courtyard area with a few tables, allowing for al fresco dining during the warmer months.Mademoiselle's food menu changes regularly depending on seasonal availability but dishes always take inspiration from traditional French recipes. Hearty starters might include a whole baked camembert with confit garlic and cranberry and red onion marmalade, or crispy battered chestnut mushrooms with garlic mayo. When it comes to main courses at Mademoiselle’s you can expect everything from lentil ragout with warm sourdough to rump with pea, potato and mint fricassee, while desserts on offer might include a chocolate Grand Marnier brûlée.Just as much attention has been paid to the drinks offering at Mademoiselle’s. The extensive wine list has been carefully put together and, just like the food menu, is primarily focused around France. There are also various spirits, beers and soft drinks on offer.

We ate out several times during our three night break near Whitby and had some great food in several places - but we enjoyed Mademoiselle's most.
The menu is interesting and varied, including choices for my vegetarian husband. The food is thoughtfully prepared and delicious, and we loved the quirky atmosphere. We've experienced terrible acoustics in some restaurants recently but Mademoiselle's have got it right - with lots of items to break up the sound and an inobtrusive sound track.
