Those familiar with izakaya will know that this Japanese dining format is all about sharing (and drinking). At Koryu (formerly Tokyo Sizzle) in Colchester, this idea is embodied perfectly. Here, the extensive menu is to be enjoyed continuously through the evening and the staff are happy to assist with any questions. The interiors are elegant and stylish, with cream chairs, simple wood furnishings and cherry blossom-style floral arrangements.
While you peruse the enormous selection of authentic Japanese food, you can snack on edamame, beef gyoza, takoyaki (octopus dough balls) or chicken karaage (Japanese fried chicken) with mayo. For something lighter, there are also salads and soups too. Next up, the Hirata buns are a must, with fillings including beef teriyaki, crispy duck or pumpkin katsu. Oysters, meanwhile, come one of four ways: with a classic mignonette, Japanese ponzu dressing and fish roe, grilled with spicy miso paste or deep fried in panko breadcrumbs with yuzu mayo.
The sushi selection dominates most of the menu, with all the nigiri, sashimi, norimaki and uramaki you could possibly want. For sharing, try the platter of tuna and salmon nigiri and sashimi, or a green dragon roll. If it’s a special occasion, there are luxury rolls such as lobster or grilled scallop, both topped with caviar and gold leaf.
Heartier options are available too, perhaps better suited to shorter meals. These include familiar favourites like katsu curry and various noodle dishes. To finish, choose from a range of authentic Japanese desserts such as chocolate or strawberry cheesecake mochi, custard dorayaki, a crispy hot Hirata bun and vanilla ice cream sandwich, matcha green tea and red bean ice cream or a house dessert platter. If it’s great izakaya in Essex you’re after, this is the place to go. Book a table above to avoid missing out.
