Having run tiny Sushiya as a successful sushi joint since the mid-noughties, the owners decided to branch out with larger premises just yards from the Usher Hall and Traverse Theatre. With a clean-cut contemporary look, Kanpai offers conventional restaurant seating and a private dining room as well as a sushi bar and kitchen counter where you can watch your food being prepped. The vast illustrated menu covers everything from basic miso soup to gaijin-friendly Tokyo rice rolls (deep-fried breaded chicken and avocado) – so keep it light with traditional nigiri and sashimi, go innovative with takoyaki octopus cakes or pick something more substantial such as teppanyaki sirloin steak. Drop-dead gorgeous presentation extends to serving your 300ml bottle of Hakushika saké in a mini ice bucket with a decorative flower. Wines are limited and expensive, so content yourself with a Japanese beer.
