Despite its large number of Asian students, there are few decent Japanese restaurants in Cambridge – so Japas Sushi is a handy (and economical) addition to the market. Choose the front room with
its sunken tables for larger groups, little bar and obligatory fish tank or cram into rather tired-looking (but immensely popular) hideaway at the back. Sushi is the main event, and the menu covers
assorted nigiri, uramaki and the like, but it’s also worth trying out the cooked dishes – perhaps tempura or kushiyaki (skewered meats such as chicken with a sweet and sticky yakitori sauce).
Swift, efficient service keeps the food and drink flowing (bottled Asian beers and juices are top calls). It may not be innovative, high-end or a place to linger, but Japas is more authentic than
the local sushi chains and better value for money.
