Hidden away in one of York's historic streets, Izakaya brings Japanese cuisine to the region with this relaxed dining experience. Housed in a Grade II listed 18th Century home, this restaurant is anything but old-fashioned. A sleek and stylish interior, complete with marble is contrasted with amber lighting, potted plants and some cosy armchair-style seating that helps to add a cosy and homely feel to the space.
Inspired by the informal bars that are common in Tokyo, Izakaya's name comes from the Japanese meaning 'Stay. Drink. Place,' and that's exactly what to expect here. It’s the perfect spot for a couple of after work drinks with friends, inviting groups to enjoy the vibrant buzz and lively atmosphere whilst tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.
Founded by York locals Danny Victory and Adam Johnson, it aims to bring a sense of Japanese history to the area in the form of refined dining serving up dishes of intricately designed and delicately plated food. The dishes are made using Asian influences and cooking techniques, just as you’d expect, but made using the very best of Yorkshire produce.
At Izakaya, there are two menus available to choose from starting with the more traditional a la carte offering up two or three courses for diners. Choose from chicken yakitori served with cranberry, mushroom dashi with pickled shiitake and noodles or tonkotsu made with a 24h broth and topped with char siu pork and egg.
Alternatively, there's the option of an Omakase menu, available for two sittings on a Friday and Saturday, which currently includes the likes of pickled wasabi mackerel, BBQ oyster katsu and mushroom karaage in this five course special. Be sure to pick up your chopsticks and get tucked in, before finishing the meal with whatever mochi is on offer.
