One of the first successful start-ups to spring from Brixton Village Market, this stripped-back burger joint has managed to colonise London and beyond, with branches from Camden to Cambridge. The set-up is as simple now as it was then: join the queue, take your seat at one of the rough-hewn benches, choose your meat and garnishes from the pictogram menu, and tuck in (or call ahead for a takeaway and bypass the crowds).
The perfect choice has to be a thick, juicy house burger, topped with red onion relish, smoked bacon, mature Cheddar and pickled cucumber, served with addictively moreish rosemary-salt fries. To shake things up, there’s always a special – perhaps a Spanish-style patty with sobrasada, smoked San Simón cheese, pickled garlic and guindilla chillis, or a tribute to Oktoberfest topped with sauerkraut and currywurst sauce. In short, an ‘honest’ antidote to the multinational chains.
