Before Chinatown became synonymous with its many numbers of Chinese restaurants and businesses in the 1950s, its history had a rich tapestry dating back to the birth of the Post Office, Ronnie Scott’s jazz club, and the locale of many literary geniuses. Now, it is the home to many great shops, restaurants and businesses from the Asian community, including High Yaki, a Japanese BBQ restaurant that specialises in yakitori, yakiniku and dry aged wagyu. This kind of Japanese BBQ is new in London, and gives traditional Japanese food a twist to create a new kind of experience. The menu is filled with a selection of ready to grill meats and seafood, along with a staircase of ready to BBQ chef chosen meats. The menu begins with selections of edamame with sea salt, a seaweed salad and salmon tartare, along with bluefin otoro tuna dishes and pork gyozas with soy and vinegar sauce. More small plates include the Japanese fried tofu in a rich sauce along with miso soup and slices of fresh salmon. For sushi, choose from hokkaido peony shrimp and yellowtail, to sashimi in three kinds of meat. Cucumber maki, California roll and tempura shrimp rolls are also on the menu, along with Japanese A5 wagyu nigiri and wrapped gold leaf with foie gras, truffle and caviar in tacos — a dish that is very popular with customers. For meats to grill on the BBQ there is plenty to choose from, from large prawns and pork yakiniku to Japanese sausages and baked chicken thighs in a rich sauce. There's also thick sliced beef tongue, beef short ribs and freshly cut wagyu sirloin, which all make for fun grilling.
